Real Stories by Real Cops

Ed Nowicki, Editor

You’ll laugh, cry, get mad, and be sad. The one thing you won’t be is bored. That describes what you’ll feel while reading American Blue.. And it describes what a cop lives every day on the beat.

Imagine witnessing the suicide of a distraught young woman, or your partner shot in the head, or holding the hand and trying to comfort a motorist dying on the side of the road. How would you handle a woman covered from head to toe with fleas, the eleven year-old rape victim, or the bloody aftermath of a multiple murder? Cops also see the humorous and sometime soul-touching aspects of life: the downright goofy things people do, and things that will bring a smile or a tear of joy. Sometimes they’re in a position to heal and comfort, and even save a life. Add to that mix, stupid criminals, and you have a very interesting day on the beat.

These fifty true stories will take you inside the lives, minds, and souls of those who have chosen to serve and protect the rest of us. When you read them, ask yourself one question, “Could I do this job, day in and day out, for twenty or thirty years?” You’ll soon discover why some consider the choice to be a cop, a calling. There are much easier – and safer – ways to make a living and earn a pension.

As much as anything, these stories are about us. Written by the people whom we have asked to serve and protect us.

“AMERICAN BLUE is the unvarnished voice of American law enforcement. The voice isn’t always pretty, but it is always real. Ed Nowicki is a legendary lawman and through him, you will learn to view America’s cops in a way you never could have imagined.”
Lt., Randy Sutton Las Vegas Metro PD and author of “TRUE BLUE “To Protect and Serve” and “A Cop’s Life”

“Ed Nowicki is a living legend. He has done more for police training and officer survival than anyone else in American history. With American Blue, he continues to serve law enforcement in a special way.”
Ed Sanow, Editorial Director, LAW and ORDER: The Magazine For Police Management

“Ed Nowicki, who earned his spurs on the streets of Chicago, captures the reality about what police officers face everyday on the streets. After reading American Blue, you will have a new respect for the men and women who pin a badge on their chest and a gun on their hip and go out and protect our families.”
Phil Cline, Superintendent (ret.) Chicago Police Department

All royalties from American Blue will be donated to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. Your purchase helps support American law enforcement.

Conducting an advance is the most important function performed by the protective services agent. Done properly, the advance will, in effect, render the role of the protection agent to that of accompanying the principal.

Applying the principle of “creating a deterrent” to the tasks required to protect someone else, the advance will dictate to the protection agent which security measures will be employed and the extent of the resources needed for every aspect of the protection mission.

ADVANCE: The Guide For Conducting A Protective Security Advance provides the protection agent with comprehensive and detailed guidelines for scaling up or down protective missions ranging from daily trips to and from the office to international travel to high-risk destinations.

It covers every aspect and detail of an advance:

General considerations for every type of mission.

Measures taken prior to leaving the office.

Conducting on-site advances.

Measures taken during the execution of the mission.

It also contains valuable and essential supplementary material such as guidelines for establishing a Command Post, and a Protective Operation Checklist & Briefing Guide that can be customized for any protective mission.

ADVANCE: The Guide For Conducting A Protective Security Advance is an essential handbook for both new and seasoned protective service agents.

David L. Johnson has provided protective services in both the public and private sectors for more than three decades. He has coordinated Presidential, Cabinet, Ambassadorial, and Senior Executive level protective programs. He has protected political figures and corporate executives in environments with threat levels ranging from negligible to that of imminent assassination attempts by state sponsored terrorist organizations. He has also managed large scale security contracts and operations in Haiti, Afghanistan and Iraq. Today he is President of ITG Consultants, Inc., and is responsible for business development and strategic relationships. He also serves as the director of the ITG Operations Group, providing program management and supervision for executive and high-risk environment security operations.

If you can read body language you can always gain the upper hand in any contact or confrontation.

This groundbreaking – photo illustrated – book will give you an instant advantage. It will enable you to recognize potential trouble before it happens and prepare you to respond. It will help you understand and evaluate the nonverbal messages of others, regardless of the situation, from routine conversations and interviews to highly charged confrontations.

If you are able to take in the common sense principles that are set out in this book, you will become a much more effective communicator. You will be able to use these skills on both “offense” and “defense.” This book takes you through a process of understanding the body signs of confrontations, the various dimensions of interactive dialogue, and how you can manipulate dialogue in the direction you want.

It doesn’t take years of training or practice to master these techniques. They are easy to learn, more efficient, and much less confrontational than methods of “counter arguing” or verbal force threats. As soon as you finish this book you will be able to remember and use these simple and practical techniques for recognizing what the body is “saying” so you can take control of the situation.

Review of the first edition of this book appeared in Security Management Magazine (Feb 2002)

Every police officer knows about Tennessee vs. Garner, a landmark use of force case, but do you know the impact of Van Ham vs. City of Aurora regarding the lethality of certain baton strikes, or what Liebenstien vs. Crowe determined is “reasonable force?”

Police Use-of-Force Case Law – The Complete Trainer – Instructor Guide answers these and other legal questions about police use of force. Designed as an Instructor’s Guide, this teaching manual covers the legal facts and force ramifications of 84 of the most significant Federal, state, and local use of force rulings which establish legal standards in the U.S. today.

This is not like other use of force books written by lawyers that simply tell police officers “what they MUST DO.” This manual tells police officers…in plain language…”what they CAN DO!”

The Instructor Guide cover 14 specific use of force issues:

Liability Statues
Training
Control Hold
Handcuff Morbidity
Impact Weapon
Canine
Medical Care
Carotid Control
Lethal Force
In-Custody Lethal Force
Diversionary Devices
SWAT
Destruction of Property
Pursuit

Each of the 84 cases covered has two components:

1. Instructor Notes provide the instructor with additional information, teaching guides, and implied discussion suggestions.
2. A PowerPoint teaching slide for students to view that explains the case, the ruling, and the ramifications for officers.

The Manual is self-contained on a single CD. It contains:

by Robert L. Oatman

The Art of Executive Protection is about a highly specialized form of defensive warfare –modern executive protection. Its foundation rests on the doctrines of Sun Tzu, the ancient Chinese military strategist whose philosophy still rings true. His central maxim is that one must plan secretly, move surreptitiously, and foil the enemy’s intentions, so that the day may be won without shedding a drop of blood. That is the essence of executive protection – the avoidance of conflict through intelligent, proactive thinking. Add to that the demeanor of a quiet, dignified, and capable professional, and you have a description of a modern executive protection practitioner.

But The Art of Executive Protection goes far beyond philosophy. It is a practical work that benefits from the experiences of a highly skilled provider of executive protection services. Robert L. Oatman has written a guide for both executives seeking protection and those who would protect them. Among other topics, the book covers protection choreography, advance security preparations, the hazards of domestic and international travel, workplace violence, threat assessment, and training.

The book also discusses suitable preparation for persons interested in an executive protection career – what it takes to break into the field and succeed. For executives, prominent families, celebrities, and others in need of protection services, this book offers real-world advice about determining the need for protection in the first place and about avoiding the “bodyguard” and finding the protection specialist.

Foreword by Ron McCarthy

This book will sharpen your tactical edge!

SWAT TEAM Development & Deployment is structured as a guide to select personnel, and equip and train them to conduct high-risk operations. Mission specific equipment and tactics are discussed, and actual operations are cited as examples. The conclusion discusses ramifications of operations and an overview of the future for SWAT and SPECOPS.

SWAT teams across the U.S. are confronted daily with unique critical incident response challenges. There is no such thing as a routine SWAT operation. If it were otherwise, there would not be a need for a SWAT team, patrol could handle everything.

That is why SWAT teams need specialized training and equipment to prepare for the unique and unexpected. There are, however, solid fundamental principles which enable SWAT teams to adapt their operational tactics to dynamic and high-risk operations.

These are the principles and tactics that Michael Holm has detailed in SWAT TEAM Development & Deployment. Holm, a retired DEA agent with more than 25 years of operational experience around the world, provides police departments with a guidebook for creating and managing a capable SWAT team from recruitment, training, and equipment, through detailed descriptions of tactics for dealing with incidents ranging from a hostage-taking, aircraft hijacking, drug interdiction, and civil disturbance.

Complete with illustrations, diagrams, and checklists, SWAT TEAM Development & Deployment is a useful text for departments just beginning to form a SWAT team, and for those with an established team that will benefit from advanced instruction on tactics.

Organized into 29 chapters, SWAT TEAM Development & Deployment will enable a team to evaluate its personnel and equipment readiness, improve elements which may be deficient, and create a step-by-step guide for ongoing tactical training and rehearsals.

SWAT Team Development & Deployment is recommended for all members of a team – management and operators alike – and senior police officials who need to know the operational, safety, and legal issues uniquely attached to SWAT teams.

Read this book and you will learn:
How to organize and staff a team.
What equipment to use.
How to train for real-life missions.
What tactics are the most effective.
How to plan and operate for maximum safety.
How to maintain razor-edge readiness.

“Special Weapons and Tactics is a topic that is complex and multi-faceted. Mike Holm’s text covers a very broad range of issues, and is an easy read for the law enforcement officer who is looking for solid concise information that is easily located and absorbed. His book is like his career, honest, to the point, and a valuable asset that will remain relevant for many years to come.”

by Robert R. Rail, Ph. D.

Handcuffing an individual is a frequently used and vital skill for most law enforcement officers, yet scant little has been written about how to properly apply handcuffs.

REACTIVE HANDCUFFING TACTICS goes beyond just simple instructions. The techniques described and depicted in this book blend restraint equipment with reactive, bio-mechanical techniques that will enable you to safely and effectively control a subject.

These step-by-step instructions – each illustrated with photographs – provide you with a controlled alternative to force beyond need. They enable you to humanely restrain compliant, resistant, and even combative subjects using the least amount of force needed to achieve compliance.

REACTIVE HANDCUFFING TACTICS combines the twin goals of officer safety and arrestee welfare in a quick and efficient method. They are realistic and practical restraint techniques that do not sacrifice effectiveness and officer safety for liability protection.

This book begins with the fundamental techniques for handcuffing a non-resistant subject; probably the most common type of arrest and restraint. But at any stage of the cuffing procedure, a subject may choose to resist or even attempt to attack you. There are several specific examples of when and how a subject may choose to resist or attack and detailed instructions about how you can quickly and effectively defeat subject resistance without the use of excessive force which would endanger you and the subject, and increase your potential legal liability.

The most important part of law enforcement is officer safety and the most important part of officer safety is consistent and proper training! From the very beginnings of policing through the complexities of our modern times, training has been an integral part of law enforcement. The old adage of “how we train is how we will react” is true. The proper application of handcuffs is more than just getting the equipment on a subject; you must also consider the bio-mechanical limits of the offender and the “rules” that govern the use of force. Therefore, it is very important that you begin REACTIVE HANDCUFFING TACTICS training by reading carefully the CAUTIONS and USE OF FORCE sections of this book. These two sections will guide you in your training and in the safe application of handcuffs.

Applying handcuffs to any subject can be dangerous. You never know when a seemingly compliant subject will suddenly turn resistant or even combative. Included in this book is a section title THE ATTITUDE OF CONFRONTATION which will give you some insight into how body language can tip you off to a subject’s intentions. Being able to read a person’s body language will help you in any situation in which you are dealing one on one with another individual.

He is a former U.S. police officer who has served as a law enforcement trainer in Bosnia, Kosovo, and Iraq. He has taught his “understanding body language” techniques and methods to law enforcement and military personnel from more than 50 countries.
